Schools, Communities Put Park to Use...

Already, schools are starting to take advantage of the living laboratory that Paradise Creek Nature Park offers!  More will follow as the park develops. Paradise Creek Nature Park will be a huge asset to schools and communities across the area.  See a few projects listed below.

1) AQUABASE Osprey (Portsmouth Public Schools)
900 high school students in biology and ecology to perform field investigations at the park beginning 2013.
(Grant application pending to provide resources to support this.)

2) Mt. Hermon Preschool (Portsmouth Public Schools)
350 students are growing wildflowers in the classroom from seed spring 2012, to be planted spring 2012.
(Special thanks to Dollar Tree for Wetlands in the Classroom funding to Elizabeth River Project.)

3) Young Life, Hampton Roads urban chapter (Faith-based mentor program)
About 15 students began meeting after school at IC Norcum High School in January 2012 as “Park Ambassadors” to study, promote and assist the new park.
So far the students are growing wildflowers for the park, trimming invasive vines at the park and studying nature.

All 5th grade students will perform field investigations at park once park is open.

5) Wetlands in the Classroom (All 4 cities in the Elizabeth River watershed)

6) Teacher Training (Portsmouth Public Schools)
Teachers will attend workshops with Elizabeth River Project and Portsmouth Public Schools beginning fall 2012 to learn activities to implement at park.
(Grant support pending)
