and ecology to perform field
investigations at the park beginning

350 students are growing wildflowers
in the classroom from seed spring
2012, to be planted spring 2012.

3) Young Life, Hampton Roads
urban chapter (Faith-based
mentor program)
About 15 students began meeting
after school at IC Norcum High
School in January 2012 as “Park
Ambassadors” to study, promote and
assist the new park.
So far the students are growing
wildflowers for the park, trimming
invasive vines at the park and
studying nature.
4) ENVIROBASE (Portsmouth
Public Schools)
All 5th grade students will perform
field investigations at park once
park is open.
5) Wetlands in the Classroom
(All 4 cities in the Elizabeth River
watershed)
In 2012-13, approximately 2600
students in K-12 students will grow
native plants related to tidal
wetlands and shoreline buffers, for
planting at the nature park.
6) Teacher Training (Portsmouth
Public Schools)
Teachers will attend workshops with
Elizabeth River Project and
Portsmouth Public Schools beginning
fall 2012 to learn activities to
implement at park.

University of Virginia School of
Architecture
Students are conducting a studio
class to design some of the Phase 2
amenities at the park. Their
professor is the same creative
architect who led design of our
Learning Barge!
8)
Old Dominion University
Biology students are conducting
several field investigations at the
park, studying both bugs and birds. |
